As you mull over what to buy Auntie Doris this year, give a second thought before you buy her that cordless nose-hair trimmer and become one of a million others who are raising carbon dioxide emissions across Britain.
According to recent reports by the Energy Saving Trust, British consumers will buy around 30 million electrical and electronic items over the coming six months, including juicers, trimmers, cordless phones and coffee machines- all of which regarded as ‘essential’ items by Britain’s gadget-addicts. As a result, in Christmases to come, it might not just be the turkeys that are left basting as temperatures soar with increased electricity consumption. The Trust is calling for gadgets to carry labels, warning shoppers how much they will cost to run, but even if this is implemented, Britain must continue to drive efficiency if we are to cool our overheating planet.
